John Muir Alumna Dr. Ayanna Howard Named 12th President of Spelman College

From John Muir High School to leading one of the nation’s most historic institutions, Dr. Ayanna Howard continues to make Muir history.

The John Muir High School Alumni Association proudly celebrates Dr. Ayanna Howard, a John Muir High School graduate who has been named the 12th President of Spelman College.

A world-renowned roboticist, artificial intelligence pioneer, entrepreneur, educator and former NASA engineer, Dr. Howard has built a remarkable career at the intersection of technology, education and leadership.

Before joining Spelman, she served as Dean of the College of Engineering at The Ohio State University. Her distinguished career also includes leadership at the Georgia Institute of Technology and research and leadership roles at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Dr. Howard’s journey began in Pasadena, where she graduated from John Muir High School before earning her engineering degree from Brown University and advanced degrees from USC and Claremont Graduate University. Her appointment represents another extraordinary chapter in the legacy of John Muir alumni making an impact far beyond Pasadena.
