John Muir High School Celebrates 100 Years With Centennial Celebration & $100,000 Legacy Fund

John Muir High School Centennial
John Muir High School is celebrating a remarkable milestone in Pasadena history: 100 years of education, achievement, community and Mustang pride.
The John Muir High School Alumni Association (JMHSAA) is helping commemorate the school’s centennial with a special Centennial Celebration on November 1, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Rufus Mead Auditorium, 1905 Lincoln Avenue in Pasadena, California.
The celebration will bring together alumni, students, educators, families and community supporters to honor a century of John Muir history while helping build a stronger future for generations of Mustangs to come.
Pasadena Federal Credit Union Becomes First Presenting Sponsor
Pasadena Federal Credit Union has contributed $10,000 as the Centennial Celebration’s first presenting sponsor, providing important early support for the historic celebration and its mission.
“We are honored to support John Muir High School’s Centennial Celebration,” Pasadena Federal Credit Union Chief Executive Officer James Chang said. “This is a celebration of a proud legacy, the generations of students and educators who have made a lasting impact, and the bright future that lies ahead.”
The $10,000 contribution was presented to Lawton Gray by Rick Flores.
Celebrating 100 Years of Mustang History
Founded in 1926 as John Muir Technical High School, Muir has spent the past century educating generations of students who have gone on to make an impact in Pasadena and around the world.
The Centennial Celebration will recognize the people, achievements and traditions that have shaped that history.
Distinguished Muir alumni being honored include legendary athlete and civil rights pioneer Jackie Robinson, acclaimed author Octavia E. Butler, and several Olympic champions.
Current John Muir students will also take part in performances during the celebration, connecting today's Mustangs with the generations who came before them.
Guests will have an opportunity to experience the school's history through tours of the renovated Alumni Museum, featuring Muir's accomplishments, traditions and contributions throughout the past century.
Organizers are also planning a Homecoming Alumni Picnic in the school's iconic “M” Quad, creating another opportunity for Mustangs to reconnect, celebrate and make new memories on campus.
Introducing the $100,000 Muir Centennial Legacy Fund
The Centennial Celebration isn't only about looking back.
It's also about investing in what comes next.
In conjunction with the school's 100th anniversary, the Muir community is launching the Muir Centennial Legacy Fund, with a goal of raising $100,000 to support students and strengthen the future of John Muir High School.
Funds will help support:
Student scholarships
Emergency needs
Long-term growth and opportunities for the Muir community
The Centennial Legacy Fund will also support the Newman-Gray Scholarship, named in honor of alumni principals Eddie Newman and Lawton Gray.
The scholarship will be awarded annually to a student who exemplifies the “Muir Spirit” and represents the values and legacy of the Mustang community.
Supporting the Muir Community After the Eaton Fire
The Centennial arrives during an especially meaningful chapter in Muir's history.
The Muir community continues to recover from the devastating Eaton Fire, which deeply affected students, staff, alumni and families.
According to the John Muir High School Alumni Association, more than 200 current Muir students and staff members lost their homes, while an estimated 1,000 alumni lost homes or were displaced.
The Muir community also mourns alumni Lora Swayne, Class of 1971, and Victor Shaw, Class of 1976, who were among those who lost their lives in the fire.
As John Muir celebrates its first 100 years, the Centennial represents not only the school's extraordinary history but also the strength and resilience of a community that continues to support one another.
Be Part of the Next 100 Years
